Charlotte offers a variety of locations one can explore on a Day Trip.
If you’re desire is to visit the coast you are approximately 3.5 hours from the popular locations of Wilmington NC, Myrtle Beach SC, Charleston SC, Savannah Ga. and Hilton Head Island. Each of these locations offer a great Waterfront Experience with superb shopping and dining. Most tend to take up these locations over a weekend given the distance.
If you are looking for waterfront locations that are slightly closer, don’t miss the scenic towns of Beaufort SC or Southport NC.
If visiting the Mountains or Lakes is your thing then you also have a variety of choices. The most popular area is Ashville NC which is approximately 2 hours from Charlotte. Ashville is a small city with a variety of Shops and Restaurants and of course The Biltmore Estate. While in Ashville you will want to venture over to the town of Hendersonville with its busy Main Street full of Shops, Galleries and Boutiques. From there you can venture into the smaller scenic towns of Cashiers or Brevard. If you are willing to go a little further is one of the most popular mountain towns in the State called the Highlands. At an elevation of 4000 feet the air is cool and the mountain views are spectacular especially in the fall. The Highlands Downtown area offers some of the best restaurants around with great galleries and shops to explore. If you are looking for something a little closer to home check out the town of Lake Lure. This is a scenic little mountain town made famous from the filming of the movie Dirty Dancing. Visit nearby Chimney Rock State Park and enjoy lunch downtown along the river. Or better yet spend the evening at the historic Lake Lure Inn.
If you would like to take a day trip to great small towns a trip to Aiken SC is well worth the drive. A small town with great downtown and known for large equestrian farms. Closer to home Mooresville NC has a great downtown as does the Villages of Davidson, Statesville, Belmont.
A trip to Greenville SC is just an 1.5 hours away and has one of the best downtown experiences in the country with great shopping, dining and riverfront park with waterfalls and walking bridges etc. Venture and 1.5 hours further and you will find yourself in the City of Atlanta with many great places to visit. Columbia SC is also just an hour from Charlotte.
Locally Lake Norman and Wylie provide a wonderful day trip whether exploring the homes around the lake or whether your choose to rent a boat for the day and explore from the lake itself. Close to home you might also visit the Charlotte White Water Center where you can experience White Water Rafting, ride or walks the many trails or challenge your skills on one of the obstacle courses.
